Bologna creates incentive plan to bring in new events

The Municipality of Bologna is looking to attract more convention and meeting business with a specially designed fund.
The Municipality of Bologna is looking to attract more convention and meeting business with a specially designed fund.

The Municipality of Bologna has created a fund dedicated to bringing more events into the city involving highly qualified local suppliers.

Called Bologna Welcomes Events, the fund will provide up to €500,000 per year for new requests for live events that bring added value to Bologna as a destination for knowledge, innovation and business.

Managed by the Bologna Convention Bureau, the fund is available for professional conference organisers, event organisation agencies, associations and companies interested in choosing Bologna for their next event. These events can include congresses, conferences, meetings and coroporate or association events. The events must take place sometime from 2023 to 2026 and involve a minimum of two consecutive overnight stays in the Bologna metro area.

For international events where the majority of participants are from other countries, the fund will provide a grant of €10 per participant for 400-999 participants. That goes up to €25 for events with between 1,000 and 1,999 participants, and €20 per participant for events with more than 2,000 participants.

For national events where the majority of participants are from Italy, the fund will provide €7 per participant for 400-999 participants. That increases to €10 for events with up to 1,999 participants and €14 for events with more than 2,000 people.

The maximum allowed for a single event is €50,000.

Grants will be disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds are used. The grant money will be allocated to the group at the end of the event on presentation of invoices indicating the final number of attendees.
